ビッグバンセオリー シーズン１エピソード１の解説
いつまで続くかわかりませんが（笑）、人気の海外ドラマ「ビッグバンセオリー」の英語の解説をしてみたいと思います。

シェルドンの英語は非常に難しい単語が多く使われていて、シェルドン役のジム・パーソン本人も知らない単語があるとか。
ということで知らない単語を全て覚えこむ必要はないと思います。
また文化的背景や様々なオタク的知識があるとさらに楽しめるとは思いますが、なくても笑えるところは本当にたくさんあります。
と言ってもそのような知識があるとさらに内容を楽しめますし、多くのアメリカ人が楽しんでいるこのドラマを理解することは、英語だけではなくアメリカの文化を深く理解することにもつながるはずです。
ということで、忘備録的な意味でも、自分が意味のわからなかったところ、知らなかった単語などを中心に拾って解説していきたいと思います。
Sheldon: So if a photon is directed through a plane with two slits in it and either slit is observed it will not go through both slits. If it’s unobserved it will, however, if it’s observed after it’s left the plane but before it hits its target, it will not have gone through both slits.
まず冒頭のシェルドンのセリフ。いきなり難しいです。
内容は量子力学の基本的な実験として有名な二重スリット実験のことです。
photonは光子、planeは飛行機ではなく板のことですね。
直訳すると、「光子が２つのスリットのある板を通り、どちらかのスリットが観測されている場合には、光子は両方のスリットは通らない。もしスリットが観測されていない場合、光子は両方のスリットを通る。しかし、光子が板を通ってから標的に当たる前に観測された場合、両方のスリットは通らない。」
意味が取りづらいですが、これは結果が常識と反することで有名な実験のことを言っているので仕方がないですね。

クロスワードパズルを横から解いてしまうレナード。
個々の単語は省略しますが、「Papa Doc's capital idea」のcapital ideaは「名案」の意味です。capitalは口語で素晴らしいという意味があります。Port -au-Princeがハイチの首都なので、このcapitalには首都の意味もかけているのかもしれません。Papa Docはハイチの元大統領フランソワ・デュヴァリエの愛称です。
Receptionist: Fill these out.
fill outで記入するという意味ですね。ちなみにfill inも記入する意味ですが、空欄を埋めるといった感じで若干ニュアンスが異なります。
Sheldon: Leonard, I don’t think I can do this.
Leonard: What, are you kidding? You’re a semi-pro.
レナードの「セミプロだろ？」というセリフですが、このsemiの発音が「セミ」ではなく、「セムァイ」という感じになっているので注意が必要です。
Sheldon: I know, and I do yearn for faster downloads, but there’s some poor woman is going to pin her hopes on my sperm, what if she winds up with a toddler who doesn’t know if he should use an integral or a differential to solve the area under a curve.
pin one's hope onで「～に望みをかける」。
wind upで「～になって終わる」、つまりここは「曲線の下部の面積を求めるのに微分を使うべきか積分を使うべきかわからない子供になってしまう」ということです。
精子バンクでIQの高い人の精子を得ても必ずIQの高い子供になるかわからないという話の流れですね。
Leonard: I don’t know, I’ve never reneged on a proffer of sperm before.
renege onで「（約束を）破る」。neはnotやnegativeのような否定的な意味の語源です。profferは「申し出」で、offerと同様の意味。
Sheldon: If the height of a single step is off by as little as two millimetres, most people will trip.
tripは「つまずく」という意味があります。
Sheldon: Two hundred pound transvestite with a skin condition, yes she is.
聞き取りが非常に難しい・・・。transvestiteで「異性服装倒錯者」、conditionは口語で「病気、異常」の意味があります。200ポンドある皮膚病の女装マニア、という感じでしょうか。
Sheldon: We never invited Louis-slash-Louise over.
上記の女装マニアのこと。男性なのでLouisですが女装しているのでスラッシュ（＝もしくは)Louiseという言い方をしています。
Leonard: Anyway, um. We brought home Indian food. And, um. I know that moving can be stressful, and I find that when I’m undergoing stress, that good food and company can have a comforting effect. Also, curry is a natural laxative, and I don’t have to tell you that, uh, a clean colon is just one less thing to worry about.
後半部分、laxativeで「便通の良い」（laxはlooseと同じくゆるいという意味）、colonは句読点の「：」の他に「大腸」という意味があり、（カレーでお通じの良くなった）綺麗な大腸で一つ心配事が減るよね、ということ。
Sheldon: Leonard, I’m not expert here but I believe in the context of a luncheon invitation, you might want to skip the reference to bowel movements.
bowelで「腸」、bowel movementsは「お通じ」。昼食の招待にお通じの下りはいらないんじゃない、ということですね。
Sheldon: Yeah, well, it’s just some quantum mechanics, with a little string theory doodling around the edges. That part there, that’s just a joke, it’s a spoof of the Bourne-Oppenheimer approximation.
doodleで「いたずら書きをする」。spoofは「パロディ」。Bourne-Oppenheimer approximationは「ボルン－オッペンハイマー近似」と言う物理学の用語。
Sheldon: If by holy smokes you mean a derivative restatement of the kind of stuff you can find scribbled on the wall of any men’s room at MIT, sure.
ここも聞き取れません・・・。derivativeは「派生した」、またそこから「月並みな」という意味にもなります。scribbleで「走り書きする」、scriptなどと同じ語源です。
Penny: So, Klingon boggle?
Leonard: Yeah, it’s like regular boggle but, in Klingon. That’s probably enough about us, tell us about you.
boggleは文字の書かれたブロックで遊ぶ単語探しゲームのこと。
これをKlingon、つまりドラマ「スタートレック」で使われる架空の言語Klingonで行うということですね。
Penny: Oh, anyways, I’m also writing a screenplay. It’s about this sensitive girl who comes to L.A. from Lincoln Nebraska to be an actress, and winds up a waitress at the Cheesecake Factory.
後半のwind upは前にも出てきましたが「～で終わる」。つまり女優を目指してネブラスカ州のリンカーンからロサンゼルスに出てきたけど結局チーズケーキファクトリーのウェイトレスのままで終わる女の子の話、ということですね。
Penny: Oh God, you know, four years I lived with him, four years, that’s like as long as High School.
Sheldon: It took you four years to get through High School?
アメリカでは高校が４年制の所が多いそうです。シェルドンは飛び級しているので高校を出るのに４年かかったの？と言っています。
Sheldon: Point taken. It has been some time since we’ve had a woman take her clothes off after which we didn’t want to rip our eyes out.
point takenで「おっしゃるとおり」。rip our eyes outで「目玉をくりぬく」。
「女性が服を脱ぐのを見て僕たちが目玉をくりぬこうと思わなかった時からしばらく経っている」、つまり少し前にレナードのおばあさんの裸を見たときは目玉をくりぬこうと思った、ということですねー。
Leonard: That’s not to say that if a carnal relationship were to develop that I wouldn’t participate. However briefly.
carnalは「肉体の」。carnivalが謝肉祭というように、carnは肉の意味があります。
「（自分は良い隣人になろうとしているだけだけど、）肉体的な関係に発展するかもしれない時にそれに参加しないということじゃあないんだ。・・・関係は短い間だろうけど。」
関係がすぐに終わるという自虐的なセリフが笑いどころでしょうか。
Leonard: Can we please stop saying coitus?
Sheldon: Technically that would be coitus interruptus.
coitusは学術用語（ラテン語）で「性行為」、interruptusはinterrupt「さえぎる」から派生して「さえぎるもの」。coitus interruptusは中絶性交、つまり妊娠を目的としない性行為ということ。
Leonard: Sheldon, I’m so sorry I dragged you through this.
Sheldon: It’s okay. It wasn’t my first pantsing, and it won’t be my last.
dragはドラッグ＆ドロップのドラッグでここでは引き込む、巻き込むの意味。pantsingはズボンを脱がすいたずら。
Leonard: We’re home.
Penny: Oh, my God, what happened?
Leonard: Well, your ex-boyfriend sends his regards and I think the rest is fairly self-explanatory.
self-explanatoryは「自明な」。explanatoryはexplainの派生ですね。
「君の元カレが宜しく言っていたよ、後は（ズボンを取られているこの状況を）見ればわかるよね」。
Leonard: Our babies will be smart and beautiful.
Sheldon: Not to mention imaginary.
not to mentionは「いうまでもなく」。
「僕たちの子供は賢くて美しくなるよ。」「それに言うまでもなく架空の存在だね。」
Sheldon: We can’t have Thai food, we had Indian for lunch.
Penny: So?
Sheldon: They’re both curry based cuisines.
Penny: So?
Sheldon: They would be gastronomically redundant. I can see we’re going to have to spell out everything for this girl.
gastronomicallyはgastronomy「美食」の派生。なおgastroは「胃の」という意味があります。redundantは「余分の」で、reは再びといった意味の語源です。
spell outで（一言一句）「詳細に説明する」。
「（タイ料理とインド料理はカレーベースで）食事内容が重複しているってことだよ。この娘には全部説明しないといけないみたいだ。」
Howard: Turn left on Lake Street and head up to Colorado. I know a wonderful little sushi bar that has karaoke.
karaokeはまさにカラオケですが、キャリオケのように発音されるので要注意。
Sheldon: I don’t know what your odds are in the world as a whole, but as far as the population of this car goes, you’re a veritable Mack Daddy.
oddsはカタカナでもオッズとして使われますが、「掛け率」のことですね。
veritableは「まぎれもない、本物の」。Mack Daddyは「色男」の意味だそうです。由来はよくわかりませんが。
ということでシェルドンのあまりに難しい箇所などは飛ばしましたが、分かりにくい部分を解説してみました。
かなり長くなるのでどれだけ続けられるかわかりませんが、気長にやっていきたいと思っています。
